As The Realm has evolved, so too has the impact and importance of Alignment changed. When you made your character you were given the choice of being Good, Neutral, or Evil. However, this initial choice does not permanently determine your character's alignment. As you kill more creatures of a given alignment your alignment shifts. If you frequently kill Good creatures, such as Faeries and Paladins, you will become Evil. Conversely, if you kill Evil creatures, such as Zombies and Hell Snakes, you become Good. Most of the monsters in the Realm, particularly those of lower level, are of Neutral aligment and do not affect your alignment status one way or the other. But as you gain levels, and begin to tackle the stronger opponents in the game, alignment takes on increasing import.
Alignment affects how some spells effect you, whether as caster or as target, as well as how some monsters and NPCs react to you. For example, the spell Wrath of the Gods is alignment dependant, inflicting full damage only upon creatures of Evil alignment and half damage on Neutral opponents. It also damages the caster if he/she is of non-good alignment, again, half damage on neutral casters and full damage on evil. Paladins and Guardians are two NPCs which cast Wrath of the Gods, however they only use the spell against you if you are of non-good alignment. On the other hand, the spell Death Wish only affects non-evil targets.
If you wish to hunt certain creatures it often is valuable to be of an alignment that prevents them from using their most potent spells against you. High level players frequently enter the Holy Caves, exclusively using Death Wish against the Paladins found there to make quick experience. But Paladins can cast Wrath of the Gods and if you are of non-good alignment a couple of Paladin WoGs can put you against the ropes. Therefore the savy player watches his alignment and, when it shifts toward evil, they will take a break from Paladin killing and make a few quick trips into Thieve's Hole, killing the evil thieves until their alignment shifts back to Good.
Each step in alignment requires approximately 25 kills of creatures of the alignment opposite that toward which you are shifting. The level of the opponent does not matter, a Zombie is as good as a Baby Dragon for shifting your alignment toward Good. Be aware, however, that summoned creatures do not effect your alignment when you kill them, just as they do not provide you with experience. If an Undead Necromancer summons a group of Zombies in combat against you, and you kill them all, only the Necromancer counts for experience and alignment.
